The biggest news today is related to the telecom industry, where tech Indian tech giants Airtel and Jio have partnered with Starlink. Initially, both companies opposed Starlink’s entry into India, but they have now reached an agreement. The partnership with Starlink is expected to speed up the introduction of satellite communication (satcom) services in India. While Starlink will need to obtain several regulatory approvals, it is anticipated that satellite internet could be available to mobile users by the end of this year, providing significant relief to people in remote areas.
Bharti Airtel has reached out to Starlink first. One day later, Bharti Airtel announced its partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink internet service in India, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio revealed on Wednesday that it has entered into a similar agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

Starlink will need government approval in India
For the agreement to be implemented, SpaceX must receive approval from the Indian government to provide Starlink services in India. The telecom sector is highly regulated, requiring approvals from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Starlink may face several challenges in India
- Starlink still needs to obtain regulatory approvals from the Indian government, including security clearances, before it can officially launch its services.
- Starlink’s services are relatively expensive compared to existing broadband and mobile data services in India. For example, in Bhutan, Starlink’s residential plans start at around ₹2,500 per month, which may not be affordable for many Indians.
- Indian telecom companies like Airtel and Jio have criticized Starlink’s entry, fearing it could disrupt their businesses, especially after they have invested heavily in spectrum auctions and infrastructure.
Airtel and Jio users Details
Jio currently has the highest number of users in India, with 126.3 million users, while Airtel has 75.8 million. The partnership with Starlink is expected to enhance services, particularly in rural areas where internet access is limited.
Airtel and Jio strategy to provide Starlink services:
Jio plans to provide Starlink solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms, leveraging its strong policies to deliver reliable broadband services across the country. Airtel has also committed to improving customer services in collaboration with Starlink.
The introduction of Starlink services in India is seen as revolutionary, especially for areas lacking wired internet connections. It could significantly benefit rural populations and improve access to essential services like healthcare and education.
A key concern is whether the high-speed broadband services provided via satellite will be affordable for low-income groups. Current pricing plans in Bhutan suggest that Starlink’s services may not be accessible to everyone.

Spectrum Allocation Issues
The Indian government has decided not to auction satellite spectrum but to allocate it to companies like Airtel and Jio. This could affect pricing; if companies incur high costs for spectrum, they may pass those costs onto consumers, making plans more expensive.
Benefits of Starlink
Starlink’s satellite internet could significantly improve internet access in rural and remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is lacking. Starlink aims to launch more satellites to enhance global internet connectivity, which could benefit India as well.
The success of Starlink in India will hinge on its capacity to provide competitive pricing. At present, its plans are viewed as costly for the typical Indian consumer. Starlink asserts that it can provide speeds of up to 150 Mbps. While this is faster than conventional satellite internet, it still falls short of fiber broadband speeds. Nevertheless, it has the potential to revolutionize internet access in regions lacking any existing infrastructure.
